Samuel Sturgeon (about 1860-about 1740)
Samuel Sturgeon was born about 1680 in Ulster, Northern Ireland. He married about 1702-1705 in Ireland, but his wife's name is unknown. They had 9 children, all born in Ireland.[1] It is not known whether Samuel's wife accompanied the family to America in 1730. They settled in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, PA, not far from Harrisburg, PA. New construction of townships and counties afterward put him in Paxtang Township, Dauphin County, where he died in about 1740.[2]
A book written by Claudius T. McCoy in 1926 entitled "Genealogical History of the Sturgeons of North America" contains information about this family, although very little about the four younger sons. He writes: "The Sturgeons as a clan are unsentimental, indifferent, and poor correspondents and the information necessary for a creditable history was extracted from them with much difficulty, and the John Sturgeon progeny are the worst of the tribe."
Also from McCoy: "Samuel died about sixty, and Samuel II about forty-five, while Jeremiah I and Henry I, having safely passed these points, lived well into the eighties and John I is said to have died in his 110th year."
The children of Samuel Sturgeon were as follows:
i. Samuel Sturgeon II, b. about 1706 in Ulster, Ireland; died March 17, 1749/50in Paxtang Twp., Dauphin, Lancaster Co., PA.
ii. Jeremiah Sturgeon I, b. abt. 1708 in Ireland; died 1 January 1795 in Paxtang Twp., Dauphin, Lancaster Co., PA.
iii. Thomas Sturgeon, b. abt 1710 in Ireland; died abt 1783.
Note for Thomas: He was the first of the Sturgeons to purchase land in Lancaster Co., and the land records show that he bought more land than any of the others.
iv. Henry Sturgeon I, b. abt 1712 in Ireland; died between 1796-1799.
v. Peter Sturgeon I, b. bet. 1712-1714 Ulster, Ireland.
vi. William Sturgeon I, b. abt 1716 in Ireland.
vii. Robert Sturgeon, b. abt 1718 in Ireland.
viii. Sarah Sturgeon, b. abt 1720 in Ireland.
ix. John Sturgeon, b. abt 1722 in Ireland, d. abt 1832 in Hart County, Northtown, KY. |

John Sturgeon (1722-1832)
Elenor Ferrys (d. 1782-83)
According to the Familytreemaker website of Loretta M. Beasley, Descendants of Samuel Sturgeon: John Sturgeon was born about 1722 in Ulster, Ireland, the youngest of nine children of Samuel Sturgeon and his wife. Samuel and all his children came to America in about 1730, settling in what would become Paxtang, Dauphin Co., PA. (Two passenger ship records show a John Sturgeon coming to America in 1740; if that is the case, he came at age 18, joining his father and brothers who were already here.)
John's wife's name was Elenor Ferrys. Church records cited in the McCoy book (pages 91-92) indicate they were married in Paxtang on May 13, 1760[3]. However, the Familysearch.org (LDS) family record gives her name as Susan(nah).
They had the following children:[4]
i. Robert Sturgeon 1755 Cumberland Co., PA-Sep 1812 IN
ii. Jeremiah Sturgeon, b. 14 Oct 1760 PA, d. 14 Feb 1816
iii. James Sturgeon 1758 Cumberland, PA-1860 Hart, KY
iv. John Sturgeon 1760-1832 Bogard Creek near Riddle, Crawford Co., IN
v. Mary S. Sturgeon b. bet. 1770-80, m. Underhill
vi. Martha Sturgeon b. abt 1771 probably Cumberland, PA, m. Gifford
vii. Sarah Sturgeon b. abt 1773 PA; m. Jesse Satterfield before 1790 in Barren Co., KY
viii. Nellie "Eleanor" Sturgeon b. 1774, m. Truax
x. Barbara Sturgeon b. abt 1776, m. Abraham Goodwin 9 July 1792 Nelson Co., KY
From "Genealogical History of the Sturgeons of North America" by Claudius T. McCoy (1926) comes this account: "I received a letter from one Louden F. Sturgeon of Lincoln, Nebraska…. Correspondence developed the intelligence that according to their family tradition, his ancestor John Sturgeon was the youngest of eight brothers who had been born in Ireland and had come with their father to Pennsylvania and had settled near Harrisburg, and that John had, prior to 1790, moved to Kentucky…."
"John probably went from the paternal roof-tree with his brother Robert to Cumberland County, PA about 1755 and some time later went to Kentucky…. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War."
The Descendants of John Sturgeon website says he served in the Revolutionary Army from 1778-1781.
John bought land in Cumberland County in 1767 and sold it in 1783, and Elenor signed the deed with him. He sold more land there in 1784 and Elenor did not sign, indicating she had died by them. This is the last record found of him in Pennsylvania, and he was in Kentucky by 1784.[5]
In 1782-84 he had moved his family to Bourbon County, Kentucky, where he either came with Daniel Boone or shortly after. He was on the 1790 tax list for Shelby County, Kentucky. In 1792 he lived in Nelson County, Kentucky.[6]
From the McCoy book, written in 1926: "The descendants of John are very numerous; they were long lived and had large families. John and his son James, and perhaps others of his sons settled in the wilds of Kentucky, while other sons went to Virginia or elsewhere and were of the early pioneers. They got away from the culture of their fathers and of the eastern settlements, and it is manifest today in their descendants, many of whom have very little education or culture and can scarcely write. They also have lived to themselves and have little knowledge of each other. So that it was and is difficult to obtain information as to other members of the family….. The Sturgeons as a clan are unsentimental, indifferent and poor correspondents and the information necessary for a creditable history was extracted from them with much difficulty, and the John Sturgeon progeny are the worst of the tribe."
By 1810 John Sturgeon and his son James were settled in Hart County, Kentucky (in south central Kentucky). He was living with James in the 1820 Hart County census, and John is listed as over 100 in the 1830 Hart County census, living in James Sturgeon's household.
John Sturgeon died about 1832 at the age of 110 in Hart County, Kentucky, and is buried on the banks of the Green River, Hart Co., KY. |

Jeremiah Sturgeon (1760-1816)
Mary (b. abt 1759)
Jeremiah Sturgeon was born 14 October 1760 in Mt. Pleasant Twp., York Co., PA, the second of nine children of John Sturgeon and Elenor Ferrys Sturgeon. He married Mary in about 1779 in Kentucky.[7] She was born about 1759 and died after 1827 in Indiana.[8] They had the following children:[9]
i. Matthew Sturgeon, d. 1824 Crawford co., IN
ii. Jeremiah Sturgeon 1780-1840 (m. (1) Abigail Sherman, (2) Margaret Wilson, (3) Sarah Brumback
iii. Elijah Sturgeon (1795-1885)[10] m. Lucinda McCullock.
iv. John Sturgeon b. abt 1798 Harrison Co., KY, d. 1840 KY.
v. Rebecca Sturgeon abt 1802 Harrison Co., KY-d. before 1880, m. Underhill.
vi. Susanna Sturgeon 1804-1892
According to Loretta Beasley's website, Jeremiah married twice more, to Mary Small and Mary Kuehn, with whom he had additional children. 1782 is given as the date for both marriages, which couldn't be correct; besides, the first Mary's children had birth dates after that. I have emailed her with questions, without response.
Jeremiah died 14 February 1816 in Allegheny County, PA, leaving a will dated 23 December 1813, naming only the children of his last marriage. I also have questions about this. |

Elijah Sturgeon (1795-1885)
Lucinda (Lucy) Jane McCullock (1804-1892)
Elijah Sturgeon was born 9 October 1795[11] in Harrison County, Kentucky, the third (?) of six(?) children of Jeremiah and Mary Sturgeon.[12]
Lucinda (Lucy) Jane McCullock (also spelled McCulloch or McCullough)[13] was born about 1804[14] in Harrison County, Kentucky. They were married 16 August 1821 in Grant Co., KY.[15]
Elijah and Lucinda had the following children:
i. Jeremiah Sturgeon IV 1824-1915 (bur. Lebanon Church cem.)
ii. William Henry Sturgeon (1827-1913[16]) m. Martha Ann Beach
iii. Avarilla Sturgeon (about 1828-1911) m. John J. Vaughn
iii. Cyrus Sturgeon b. abt 1836 Owen, KY
iv. Alexander Sturgeon b. abt 1838 Owen, KY
v. John Thomas Sturgeon b. abt 1839 (bur. Lebanon Church cem.)
vi. Emily Sturgeon b. abt 1842 Owen, KY
vii. George Washington Sturgeon b. abt 1849 Owen, KY
A Roster of the Volunteer Officers and Soldiers from Kentucky in the War of 1812-15 (pp. 89-90) shows Elijah and his brother Jeremiah served as privates in the Army, each for about two months. Elijah was a member of Captain John D. Thomas' Company, Boswell's Regiment, Kentucky Detached Militia from March 29, 1813 to April 28, 1813; then re-enlisted as a member of Capt. Manson Seamonds' Company, Boswell's Regiment, Kentucky Detached Militia from April 29, 1813-May 31, 1813.[17]
The 1850 Grant Co., KY census shows Elijah Sturgeon age 63, Lucinda 40, Henry 20, Cyrus 14, Alexander 17, Thomas 10, Emily 8, and George W. 5.
The 1860 Grant Co., KY census shows Elijah Sturgeon age 81, Lucinda 55, Cyrus 21, Thomas 19, Emily 16, and George 13.
The 1880 Gallatin Co., KY census shows Elijah Sturgeon 97, Lucinda 78, living with the family of Thomas Horde, 34, his wife Patsy 24, and their two children Amy 4, and Berta Lee 2.
If the birth date of 1795 is correct for Elijah, the census records of 1850, 1860, and 1880 have given him an additional eight to sixteen years of age.
Elijah died 27 January 1885 in Gallatin Co., Ky, and was buried in the Old Lebanon Presbyterian cemetery. Elijah Sturgeon Tombstone
Lucinda died 5 December 1892 and is also buried there.[18]

In the same cemetery are the graves of John McCullough (1789-1879) and his wife Jane (1789-1877) who could be the parents of Lucinda Jane (?).[19] |

Henry and Martha Sturgeon Tombstone
(Elizabeth McCullough Beach may have been a sister to Lucy Jane McCullough, wife of Elijah Sturgeon, above. If so, Elizabeth's daughter Martha Beach and Lucy's son Henry Sturgeon would be first cousins.)
Daniel Coleman Beach and his second wife, Abigail Price, were also the parents of Hannah Beach, grandmother of Emma Miller McClure, and Julia Ann Beach, mother of Charles Beach and grandmother of Callie Beach. (see BEACH .)
