(1786-1859)

Martin Speegle was born 20 Apr 1788 in Lincoln Co., NC, the son of Samuel Speegle and Sarah Nan Jarrett.

Mary Magdalina “Molly” Shook was born in about 1786, probably in Pennsylvania, the daughter of George Shook[1].  Her mother’s name is unknown.

Martin and Molly were married 29 Aug 1809 in Lincoln Co., NC.  Their children were as follows[2]:

i.                    George Mills Speagle b. 11 Oct 1810 Lincoln Co., NC

Martin and Molly had at least one of their children while still in North Carolina, as they appear in the Lincoln Co., NC census of 1810[8] as follows:  Martin Speagle, 1 male under 10 [possibly George], 1 male 16-26 (Martin), and 1 female 16-26 (Molly).

By 1820 they were in Harrison Co., KY where they appeared in the census as follows:[9]  Martin Speagle, 4 males under 10 (Samuel, George, Andrew and ?), 1 male 26-45 (Martin), 1 female under 10 (?), 1 female 26-45 (Molly).

In 1830 the family was in Grant Co., KY, and appeared in the census as follows:[10]  Martin Spegal, 3 males 5 and under (?), 1 male 10-15 (Andrew), 1 male 15-20 (Samuel), 1 male 40-50 (Martin), 2 females under 5 (Susannah and Sarah), 2 females 5-10 (Elizabeth and Magdalina, 1 female 40-50 (Molly).

The family has not been found in the 1840 or 1850 census.

Molly died 3 September 1859 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.[11]

The following year, the 1860 Pendleton County, KY census showed Martin Speigle, age 72, living with his daughter Sarah and her husband James Belew.[12]  Living next door to them were Martin’s son James and his wife Mary; close by were Martin’s son Andrew and his wife Mary, and Martin’s son Martin G. and his wife Zerella.

Martin died 6 July 1872 in Pendleton Co., KY.

In the 1880 census, the children of Martin and Molly Speagle were found as follows:

George Spegal, age 69, living with his wife Mehala and two grandchildren in Stevenson, Kenton Co., KY.

Samuel Speagle, 66, and his wife Nancy, living with 6 children in Grant County, Kentucky.

Simeon Tomlin and his wife Elisabeth, 56,  living with 4 children in Pendleton Co., KY.

James W. Belew and his wife Sarah, 51,  living with 4 children in Pendleton Co., KY.

Martin G. Spegel, 50,  and his wife Sarah living with 7 children in Pendleton Co., KY.

James Spegal, 44,  and his wife Mary living in Pendleton Co., KY.

10th generation

Samuel Speagle

(1814-before 1900)

Nancy Vaughn

(about 1830-after 1900)

Samuel Speagle was born in about 1814, probably in Harrison Co., Kentucky, the son of Martin Speagle and Mary Magdalina “Molly” Shook

Samuel was married, first, to George Ann Webster, on 29 May 1838 in Grant Co., KY.[13]  They had two children, Charlotte and Charles.  The family appears in the 1840 census of Grant Co., KY as follows:  Samuel Speagle, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 1 male under 5.

On 1 August 1850 Samuel divorced George Ann.  Neither Samuel nor George Ann nor the children are found in the Kentucky 1850 census, so George Ann may have remarried and/or taken the children out of the state.

Samuel married, second, Agness Webster, and according to the “Speegle and Their Many Spellings” website, this took place on 20 April 1850—several months before the August 1850 divorce, so one of those dates may be incorrect.

Samuel and Agness had two children:  William Henry Harrison Speagle, born 25 May 1852, and Lindsey Winfield Scott Speagle, born 1855.

Agness died in 1855, possibly giving birth to the younger child.  The two little boys went to live with Agness’ parents, and later Agness’ brother Greenberry Webster was named their guardian on 20 Feb 1861, “their father declining to act,” according to the court record.[14]  By 1861 Samuel had married for a third time and had started another family.

Nancy Vaughn[15] was born about 1830[16], probably in Fayette Co., KY, the daughter of Griffin Vaughn and his second wife Sarah (Sally) Lee.  (See VAUGHN)

Nancy Vaughn was married, first, to James H. Richardson on May 19, 1851.[17]  Bondsman was William H. Sturgeon (father of Henreatta Sturgeon who m. Stephen Douglas McClure).  James died only six months after their marriage, on November 25, 1851[18] and their son, James H. Richardson, was born seven months later on June 11, 1852[19].

About 1858, Samuel Speagle, a widower, and Nancy Vaughn Richardson, a widow, were married, but I have not found a marriage record as yet.

          They had the following children:[20]

                   i.        Laura Ann (1859-1933) m. Richard Coleman Miller[21]

                   ii.       Mary E. (born 1860)

                   iii.      John R. (b. May 1862)

                   iv.      George G. (26 Nov 1865(?)-7 Apr 1930[22])

                   v.       Sara J. Sallie (b. 6 Apr 1871, d. 9 Sep 1939) m. James H.

                             Webster (1855-1939)

vi.      William (4 Aug 1869-1 Dec 1938[23]) (apparently named

                             after his half brother)

                   vii.     James T. (b. Oct. 1874, d. 10 May 1946)[24]  (apparently

                            named after his half brother)

                   viii.    Thomas (b. Feb. 1877, d. 10 Feb. 1960)[25]

The 1860 Grant Co., KY census shows Samuel Speagle, age 40, a farmer, his wife Nancy age 36, children James H. 8 (this would be Nancy's son from her first marriage) Laura Ann 2, and Mary E., 3 months.

The 1870 Grant Co., KY census shows Samuel Spiegel, age 56, wife Nancy 44, William H. 19 (Samuel’s son from his marriage to Agness), Laura Ann 12, Mary E. 10, John R. 8, George G. 5, Sarah J. 3, and Harvey Richardson, 19, who is Nancy's son James H. from her first marriage.

          The 1880 census shows Samuel Speagle (back to the previous spelling) age 66, Nancy 45, John R. 18, George G. 14, Sarah J. 12, William 10, James T. 6, Thomas 4.

James Harvey Richardson was not found in the 1880 census; however, that is the year he married Nora Belle Vestal.[26]

Samuel Speagle apparently died between 1880 and 1900, as he does not appear in the 1900 census, but there is this listing in Mt. Zion, Grant Co:

Nannie Speagle, 67, born Mar 1833 MO; James 25 born Oct 1874 MO; and Thomas 23 born Feb 1877 MO.  Except for the Missouri birthplaces, this family is probably Nancy Speagle and her two youngest children.  Living next door to them is Nancy’s son Harvey Richardson 49 b. Jun 1851, and his wife Belle 41, b. 1858.  They had no children.

Three of Samuel and Nancy Speagle's sons appear with their families in the 1900 census:

          Grant County:  George Spigal, 32 b. Oct 1867, Mary E. 38, Maudie 9, and Claudia 5.

Grant County:  John Spigal 37, born May 1860, Feoba 39,  Russel 16, Mattie H. 12.

Boone County:  William Speagle b.  Aug 1871; Zulie 22, Elmer 3, Robert K. 3 mos.

Grant County:  Sallie Speagle, 30, single, servant

In the 1910 census, William Speagle, 37, is in Grant County with his wife Zula D., children Elmer W. 13, Robert N. 11, Ada M. 9, Sallie 7, and Omer 2.

William Speagle had a son named Omer, born in 1908[27].  This was apparently the cousin of Emma Miller McClure, after whom she named her youngest son, the one who thought his name was Homer until he was old enough to apply for Social Security and obtained his birth certificate for the first time.

Also in the 1910 Boone County census is Thomas H.  Spegal, 33, with his wife Lurena 22 and infant Annie B.

1910 Crittenden, Grant Co., KY census:  Harvey Richardson 57, wife Belle 51.

1910 Grant Co., KY census:  James H. Webster 55 and wife Sallie 42 (married 1 year)

1920 Crittenden, Grant Co., KY census:  Harve Richardson 65, wife Nora 61.

1920 Boone Co., KY census:  William Speigle 50, Lula 44, Kniffin 19, Sallie 17, Omer 11.

The following deaths were recorded in the Kentucky Death Index:

Sallie Webster, 9 Sep 1939, Grant, KY

          Harvey Richardson 5 November 1932
