1st generation:  the immigrant ancestors

David Rankin, Sr.

1691-1768

Mildred Jennet McCormick

1690-1770

            David Rankin, Sr., was born in 1691 in Country Antrim, Northern Ireland, and died August 1768 in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA.

            Mildred Jennet McCormick was born in 1690 in Ulster, Ballintoy or Antrim, Northern Ireland, and died between 1770-1771 in Frederick Co., VA.

            David and Jennet were married in 1718 in Raphoe Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

            David Rankin emigrated from the north of Ireland and settled in Frederick Co., VA.  Several researchers give different dates as to when this emigration took place.

            The phenomenon called "Turkey Spring" was on his plantation.  Turkey Spring is a perfectly round large spring on a height of land.  It is quite probably a fault in the limestone; from it a little stream flows through Middleway and empties into Opeckon Creek.[2]

            It should be noted that Jennet's brother was Dr. John McCormick, a graduate in medicine of the University of Dublin, who brought with him to this country a large and valuable medical library.  He was the most prominent physician in his neighborhood, and left a lasting impression upon the community in which he lived.  He died in the year 1768 leaving a wife and eight children.

            David and Jennet had at least four children:

            i.          William Rankin Sr., b. 1720 Ulster, Ireland, d. Oct 1793

                                    Washington Co., PA;

            ii.          David Rankin, Jr. (1726-1795) m. Hannah Province

            iii.         Hugh Rankin, b. about 1728 Frederick Co., VA;

            iv.         Barbara  Rankin, b. 1730  Frederick Co., VA

            The will of David Rankin,  Sr. is in Frederick Co., VA, Will Book 3, p. 443, made November 5, 1757, proved August 2, 1768.  It lists his wife and children.
