The Points Family

Ancestry of Abigail Points McClure

The following information on the Points family is from Phyllis Taylor Hawes and Janet Pease's 1994 book The History of the Points/Pointz Family: John, Nathaniel, Edward, Arthur & Francis and their descendants 1774 to 1992; Volume E - John Points of Boone County, Kentucky.

1st Generation

.

John Points

(abt 1752-1818)

Jane Slover

John Points was born about 1752 in Ireland[1].   He married Jane Slover and they had 11 children, including (perhaps) Nathaniel.

John was a private in the Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812 from March to September 1913, and served again from February to August 1815.

The Points book says there is a possibility that John and Jane were not actually the parents of Nathaniel; that he was "more than likely" the son of John's brother Francis (born about 1764 in Ireland) who was killed in the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 against the Wyandote Indians.  If Nathaniel was the son of Francis, he was apparently taken into John's home and raised as one of their children, although he was not mentioned in John's will.

2nd generation

Nathaniel Points

(b. about 1785)

(wife's name unknown)

Nathaniel Points and his wife (possibly Martha or Patsy Anderson) became the parents of at least 10 children.  One of their children was Abigail Points, born about 1822 to 1826.  Her brother William was probably the bondsman for Abigail's marriage license to Thomas Jefferson McClure.

According to the Points history, "No record of Nathaniel is found in 1840 nor has there been any deeds, probates, county histories or descendants who know about this family.  Counting the number of his children it would seem there would be some evidence somewhere of what happened to this family."

I have had some correspondence with Janet Pease, author of the Points family history, and she has done extensive research trying to find out more about Nathaniel and his family, but the results are inconclusive.  She wrote that there is a Nathaniel Points in 1810 in Boone County, 1820 in Grant County, and 1830 in Hancock Co., Indiana, who could be this Nathaniel.  Abigail fits into this family if she was born 1820-1825; the 1860 census gives her age as 38, making her born in 1822; although other census records make her younger.  The 1880 Grant Co., KY census and her son's marriage bond give her birthplace as Illinois.

In a letter dated 20 April 2002 Janet Pease wrote to me, "I still believe that the Nathaniel Points who married Patsy Anderson in 1808 Boone Co., KY is the same man living in the 1810 census for Boone County, 1820 census for Grant Co., and 1830 census for Hancock Co., IN.   He then 'disappears,' but a Nathaniel Points is on the GC tax lists for 1842-46, which could be the same guy, or his son."   Abigail Points and Thomas J. McClure were married in 1845, thus putting Abigail in Grant County in that time period.  (see McCLURE)
