Benjamin Keeling[1] (1740-before 1810)
Elizabeth Whitman (2nd wife) (born about 1740)
Benjamin Keeling was born in 1740 in Virginia, the son of William (?) Keeling (born about 1720 in Halifax, VA).
We do not know the name of Benjamin’s first wife, with whom he had the following children:
i. William Keeling b. abt 1765 VA ii. James Louis Keeling b. 1770 VA m. Mary Whitman (their son William married Nancy Hardin and became the parents of Delilah Keeling, first wife of John Thomas Mattingly) iii. Thomas Keeling b. abt 1773 VA, m. Rosannah Barlow (their son Benjamin was the father of Elizabeth Keeling, second wife of John Thomas Mattingly) iv. Peggy Keeling b. abt 1776 v. Elizabeth Keeling b. 1780 SC
Benjamin married his second wife Elizabeth Whitman about 1780 in Virginia or South Carolina. They had the following children:
vi. Jane Keeling b. 1783 m. John Stephen Hardin vii. (their daughter Nancy Hardin married William Keeling and became the parents of Delilah Keeling, first wife of John Thomas Mattingly; their daughter Frances or Fannie married Benjamin Keeling and they became the parents of Elizabeth Keeling, second wife of John Thomas Mattingly) xiii. Benjamin F. Jr. b. abt 1784 SC; xiv. Dorcas b. 1785 SC; xv Margaret (Peggy) b. 1788 SC; x. John B. b. abt 1783 SC/VA.
The Benjamin Keeling website gives this brief bit of information on Benjamin Keeling: Land grant recorded 1771 in Halifax Co., VA; sold 1778; moved to SC; moved Washington Co., KY before Apr 1790. Land transfer on file 1797 M0092. Deed Book A, p. 4; 4 Oct 1792 some records in Nelson Co., KY 200 acres Nelson Co., then in 1792 it became Washington Co. Deed Book B, pp 1-2 May 1797; Washington Co., KY for 28 acres for 36 pounds from Arthur E. Gibbons.
Benjamin died before 1810 in Washington Co., KY. |

Mary Whitman (born about 1770)
James Louis Keeling was born about 1770 in Virginia[2], the second of five children of Benjamin Keeling and his first wife.
James married on 1 October 1792 in Washington County, KY, Mary Whitman who was born about 1770.
James and Mary had the following children:
i. Richard F. Keeling 1792 ii. William Keeling (1797-1871) m. Nancy Hardin iii. Margaret Keeling 1805 iv. Elizabeth Keeling 1808 v. John Keeling 1810 vi. James Howard Keeling 1814
The 1850 census of Shelby County, Indiana[3] shows James Keeling, age 80, born in North Carolina, living in the home of his youngest son, James H., age 36, along with James’ wife Nancy 36, and three children.
James Keeling died about 1852 in Geneva, Shelby Co., Indiana. |

William Keeling was born about 1797 in Washington Co., KY, the second of six children of James Louis Keeling and Mary Whitman.
William married 27 Jan 1823[5] in Washington Co., KY Nancy Hardin who was born in Kentucky in 1801, the daughter of John Stephen Hardin and Jane Keeling.[6] (see HARDIN).
William and Nancy had 9 children:
i. Mariah Jane Keeling b. 1824 Washington Co., KY, m. John J. Hall[7] ii. Sarah Ellen Keeling b. abt 1826 Washington Co., KY m. Joseph Hall[8] iii. Delilah M. Keeling b. abt 1829 m. John Thomas Mattingly (see iv. Savilla Ann (Isabella) Keeling b. 1833 m. James Mattingly (brother of John Thomas Mattingly)[9] v. Ann Elizabeth Keeling b abt 1837 Washington Co., KY m. Paul B. Moore vi. James M. Keeling Sr. b. about 1838, m . Martha Dennis[10] vii. William Keeling, Jr. b. about 1840 viii. Uriah L. Keeling Sr. b. about 1843 m. (1) Mary Elizabeth Hardin, (2) Villia Ryan ix. John W. Keeling
The family appears in the 1850 Washington Co., KY census as follows:
KEELING, William 55, farmer Nancy 49 Delila 21 Savilla A. 17 Elizabeth 13 James 12 William 10 Uriah 7
The family has not been found in the 1860 census.
In the 1870 Washington Co., KY census[11] William Keeling 74, is living in the household of his son James Keeling 32, and James’ family, Martha 22, Willie 8, James 5, Jesse 2, Uriah 2 mos.
Nancy Hardin Keeling died before 1870, and William Keeling died in 1871. |
