The Hardin Family

 

Maternal Ancestors of Delilah Keeling Mattingly

NOTE:  The following information is from an Ancestry.com website posted by Judy Dotson entitled “Hardin[g], Keeling and Further.”

 1st generation, the Immigrant Ancestor:  Thomas Harding was born about 1639 in London, Middlesex,  England, and died about  6 Jun 1674 in Northumberland Co., VA.  He was the son of George Harding and Mary Orley.  He married Anne Mosely about 1663 in St.  Stephens, Northumberland Co., VA.  She was born between 1640-48 in Southampton, VA.  Their children included Henry Harding.

 

2nd generation:  Henry Harding was born 1666 in St. Stephens, Northumerland Co., VA, and died 19 May 1698 in Stafford Co., VA.  He married Mary Jane Aldridge in about 1688 in Northumberland Co., VA.  She was born 9 Oct 1670 in Worstead, Norwich, Norfolk Co., England.   Their children included Henry Harding.

 

3rd generation:  Henry Harding was born 1690 in Northumberland Co., VA, and died 10 Jan 1736/37 in Stafford Co., VA.  He married Anne Belcher in 1715 in Stafford Co., VA.  She was born 1692/1715 in Overwharton, Stafford Co., VA and died 13 Sept 1754 in Stafford Co., VA.  Their children included Charles Harding.

 

4th generation:  Charles Harding was born 2 Jul 1716 in Overwharton, Stafford Co., VA and died between 1767 and 1783 in Stafford Co., VA.  Charles was convicted of sorcery.  After this the family surname changed from Harding to Hardin.  He married Rachel Lunsford in 1736.  She was born 1718 in Overwharton, Stafford Co., VA.

Their children included Moses Hardin.

 

5th generation--The Kentucky Pioneer:  Moses Hardin was born 19 Mar 1751/52 in Fairfax Co., VA, and died Feb 1825/26 in Washington Co., KY.  He married Mary Ball before Feb 1777.  She was born about 1756 in Overwharton, Stafford Co., VA, and died before 1826 in Washington Co., KY.  Their children included John Stephen Hardin.

 

6th generation:  John Stephen Hardin was born 1780 probably in Virginia and died 22 Sep 1845.  He married Jane Keeling, daughter of Benjamin Keeling Sr. and Elizabeth Whitman.  She was born 1783 and died 1870.  Their children included Nancy Hardin, born 1801, who married her half cousin William Keeling.  They became the parents of Delilah Keeling, first wife of John Thomas Mattingly and mother of John B. Mattingly.   Another child of John Stephen Hardin and Jane Keeling was Frances Hardin who married Benjamin Keeling and they became the parents of Elizabeth Keeling, second wife of John Thomas Mattingly.

 

7th generation:  Nancy Hardin was born 1801 and died before 1870.  She married William Keeling on 27 Jan 1823.  (see KEELING)
