Reuben Collins (1783-1863)
Mary Riddle (d. before 1830)
Reuben Collins was born in Virginia in about 1783.[1] He married, first, Frances Riddle on 13 May 1807 in Orange Co., VA.[2] Frances was born in about 1775.[3] She apparently died young and Reuben then married her sister Mary.
Mary Riddle was born in about 1769 in Orange County, Virginia, the daughter of James Riddle and Mary Neal, and the sister of Reuben’s first wife Frances Riddle.[4] (Further information about Mary Riddle’s ancestors at the end of this biography.)
I don’t have a marriage date for Reuben and Mary, but their oldest child was born about 1810 in Virginia. Sometime before their youngest child Fountain was born in 1824 they moved to Kentucky. They had six children[5]:
i. Fielding Lewis Collins, born about 1810 VA, died after 1880 Grant Co., KY, never married.[6]
ii. Dillard Collins
iii. James Collins
iv. Mary Jane Collins (1820 VA-before 1860) m. Jackson Delf (Delph)
v. William H. Collins b. 1822 VA, m. Sarah A.
vi. Fountain Riddle Collins (1824-1914) m. Sarah Elizabeth Webster
Mary Riddle Collins apparently died at or soon after Fountain’s birth in 1824 and before 1830 because she does not appear in the 1830 census. Reuben never remarried. The family appears in the 1830 Boone Co., KY census, p. 272, as follows:
COLLINS, Reuben (male 40-50) he would be 47 in 1830 1 male under 5 Fountain? age 6 1 male 5-10 William age 8 1 male 10-15 Dillard ) these two sons 1 male 15-20 James ) could be reversed 1 male 20-30 Fielding Lewis age 20 1 female 10-15 Mary Jane age 10
The Reuben Collins family appears in the 1840 Grant County, KY census, p. 86, as follows:
COLLINS, Reuben, age 57 (male 50-60) Fountain, age 16 (male 15-20) Fielding Lewis 30 (male 30-40) Mary Jane, 20 (female 20-30) unknown female (female under 5) unknown female (female 15-20)
Reuben’s son William had married Sarah by 1840.
Reuben’s only daughter Mary Jane married Jackson Delf (also spelled Delph) on 19 November 1840[7] and in 1842 they had a daughter, Louisanna. That family appeared in the 1850 Grant Co., KY census, p. 296A as follows:
Jackson Delph 30, b. KY Mary J. 30, b. VA Louisiana 8, b. KY Collins, Lewis 40, b. VA (this is Mary Jane’s oldest brother)
By 1850, Reuben, age 67, had gone to live with his son William and his family. They appear in the 1850 Grant Co., KY census as follows:
COLLINS, William H. 28 Sarah A. 27 Fountain 8 Elizabeth J. 6 James 3 Sophia 2 COLLINS, Reuben 67
Mary Jane and Jackson Delph had two more children: Fannie in 1852 and Lucian in 1855. Soon thereafter, Mary Jane died, and there are several records in Grant County concerning her husband’s guardianship of the children Louisanna, Fannie, and Lucian.
Reuben’s sons Dillard and James do not appear in the 1850 Kentucky census index.
In 1860, Reuben is still living with his son William’s family. They appear in the 1860 Grant County, KY census as follows:
COLLINS, William H. 39 Sarah A. 39 Mary F. 20 Fountain 17 Elizabeth J. 15 James 13 Sophia 11 Angeline 9 Jackson 7 William G. 4 Marium S. 1 COLLINS, Reuben 77
According to the 1860 Grant Co., KY census, Mary Jane’s widower Jackson Delf has remarried and is living with his wife Marium, their infant Andrew D., and two of Mary Jane’s children, Fannie 8, and Lucian 5. Mary Jane and Jackson’s oldest daughter Louisanna (Loueza A.) appears in the 1860 Grant Co., KY census as age 18 with her husband Thomas J. Beach 21, and their daughter Mary Jane, 1. (Louisanna and Thomas Beach were married in 1857; they had two more children, Melinda in 1861 and Louisa in 1862. Louisanna died at or soon after the birth of her third child, thus becoming the third generation of mothers who died very young.)[8]
These three families, the William Collins family, the Jackson Delf family, and the Thomas J. Beach family, along with Fountain and Sarah Collins and their family, all appear on the same page of the 1860 Grant Co., KY census, indicating they were all close neighbors of each other at that time. Another close neighbor is the Lewis Downs family, and living with them is Lewis Collins, age 44, born VA. (He would actually have been 50.)
Reuben Collins apparently died in 1863. His will, written in October 8, 1860, was probated July 17, 1863[9]. It begins “Being very old,” and names his six children as follows: William H. Collins, Fountain R. Collins, Fielding L. Collins, Dillard Collins, James Collins, Mary Jane Delf’s heirs. I don’t believe these children are listed in order of age, as, based on the census, William and Fountain are his two youngest children. Fielding L. (Lewis or Louis in the census), William, and Fountain definitely lived in Grant County near their father. There are three James Collins in Grant County in 1850 and 1860, and it is possible one of them is Reuben’s son. There is no Dillard Collins in Kentucky.
There is a Dillard Collins in Virginia who could possibly be Reuben’s son, if he returned to his state of birth:
1850 Albemarle Co., VA census: Dillard Collins 30, b. VA, wife Mary 35, Catherine 8.
1860 Albemarle Co., VA census, p. 431: Dillard Collins 39, b. VA, occupation miller; wife M 40, dtr M.C. 12, dtr S.A. 10, dtr M.I. 8, dtr Elizabeth 4.
1870 Greene Co., VA census, p. 303: Dillard Collins 50, occ. miller, Mary 49, Martha J. 10.
In the 1870 Grant Co., KY census, the families of William H. Collins and Fountain Collins appear on page 543, and Lewis F. Collins, age 60, is on the same page, still living with the Lewis Downs family.
In the 1880 Grant Co., KY census, the families of William H. Collins and Fountain Collins appear on page 86D, and Louis Collins, age 65 (should be 70) is on the same page, now living with the Zachariah Bishpan family.

Fountain Riddle Collins (1824-1914)
Sarah Elizabeth Webster (1831-1913)
Fountain Riddle Collins was born 8 August 1824 in Boone County,[10] Kentucky, the son of Reuben Collins and Mary Riddle Collins who were born in Virginia.[11] [12]
Sarah Elizabeth Webster was born 7 September 1831 in Grant County, Kentucky, the daughter of John Webster and Mary ("Polly") Kinchloe Webster.[13] (see WEBSTER.) Sarah's parents divorced in 1834 and her mother married Samuel Hutton, with whom she had at least seven more children.[14] Sarah apparently used the name Hutton at least unofficially.[15]
Fountain and Sarah were married 29 January 1851[16] and they had at least six children:[17]
i. Arthusa L. Collins (b. about 1852) ii. Reubin S. Collins (1854-1911; m. Annie (1874-1909)[18] iii. Albert Brack Collins (1857-1929) m. Lucetta Blackburn iv. William Smith Collins (b. 22 Dec 1859[19]; m. Susie, d. 6 Aug 1942[20] v. James P. (b. about 1863) vi. Minnie Agnes (1871-1920) m. Leslie Crittenden Sipple
The family appears in the 1860 Grant Co., KY census, p. 80, as follows:
COLLINS, Fountain R. 26 Sarah E. 27 Arthusa L. 8 Reubin S. 5 Albert B. 2 William S. 5 mos.
The family appears in the 1870 Grant Co., KY census, p. 543, as follows:
COLLINS, Fount 37 Sarah E. 39 Arthusa 19 Samuel 15 Brackenridge 14 William Smith 11 James P. 7
The family appears in the 1880 Grant Co., KY census, Flat Creek District, p. 86D, as follows:
COLLINS, Fount 52 Sarah E. 48 Wm. G. 20 James P. 16 Minie A. 9 (female)
The family appears in the 1900 Grant Co., KY census, Flat Creek District, as follows:
COLLINS, Fount R. 74, born Aug 1825 Sarah E. 67, b. Sept 1832 Samuel, son, 45, b. Dec 1854 Anna, dtr-in-law, 25, born Apr 1875 Oera, grandson, 1, b. Jun 1898 (unsure of name; difficult to read) Lee S., grandson, 4 mos., b. Jan. 1900
The family appears in the 1910 Grant Co., KY census, Flat Creek precinct, p. 61B, as follows:
COLLINS, Fount R., 88 Sarah E. 79 Rubin S., son, 53 Arese W., grandson 12 (still unsure of name; same child as in 1900) Lee S., grandson, 9
Sarah died January 10, 1913, in Grant County, age 81. On her death certificate is written, "She was a sufferer from rheumatism and was partially paralyzed."[21] The informant on her death certificate is W.J. Hutton, probably her half-brother William J. Hutton.
The following year, Fountain died on August 8, 1914, his 90th birthday. The cause of death is "periostitis tubercular of lower end of tibia left leg."[22]
Fountain's obituary in the Grant County News of August 14, 1914 appeared on the front page:
OLD CITIZEN PASSES AWAY FOUNT COLLINS DIES, AGED MORE THAN FOUR SCORE
Fount Collins, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Elliston Station, died last Saturday, aged more than four score years. His death was due to ailments incident to old age. Deceased had lived most of his long life in the Elliston country and had raised a large family of children, several of whom survive him. He was well and favorably known in all of the territory in the northwestern part of the county. The interment was last Monday.
Both Fountain and Sarah are buried in the Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge, Grant Co., Kentucky.[23] Fountain and Sarah Collins Tombstone |

Albert Brack (Brackinridge) Collins
(1857-1929)
Lucetta Blackburn (1856-1940)
Photo: Albert B. Collins & Lucetta Collins tombstone, Old Vine Run Cemetery
Albert Brackinridge (Brack) Collins was born June 28, 1857, in Grant County, Kentucky, the son of Fountain R. Collins and Sarah E. Webster[24]. He was apparently called Brack, at least by his family. His granddaughter Callie Beach McClure knew him only by that name. The 1870 Grant Co., KY census identifies him as Brackinridge and the 1910 Grant County, KY census has him listed as Brackenridge H. Collins, but elsewhere he is identified as either Albert B. or Brack.
On 22 Nov. 1877 he married Lucetta Blackburn, who was born 29 June 1856 in Gallatin County, KY, the daughter of John J. Blackburn and Luvisa Stone[25]. (see BLACKBURN )
The spelling of Lucetta's name appears differently on her death certificate and her tombstone[26]. However, her name is spelled Lucetta on the tombstone of her infant son, and since she was living at that time to spell her name for the stonecarver, I am going to accept that spelling.
Brack and Lucetta had a son Albert C. Collins who was born and died on September 25, 1878, and a daughter Larra L. Collins, born 28 Aug 1880 and died 18 Jan 1881.[27]
They had five other children: i. Ellsworth (Worth) Collins, b. Nov. 1881, m. Icy Caldwell, d. Apr 1969 ii. Clyde Collins (1885-1963) m. Charles E. Beach (see BEACH) iii. Ada J. Collins, b. Feb. 1889, m. Russell Alexander, iv. John F. Collins, b. Nov. 1891, m. Flossie House, Bertha Craig v. Ashby Rankin Collins[28] b. Dec. 1893, m. Cora Dean Castleman d. 28 Jan 1981[29]
The family appears in the Grant County census as follows:
1880 Flat Creek, Grant Co., KY census, p. 85A: Collins, Albert B., 22, farmer, Lusettia wife 23.
1900 Grant Co. census: Brack Collins, age 42, wife Lucetta 43, children Elworth 18, Clyde 14, Ada J 11, John F 8, Ashba R 6, and a George Burns, age 65, native of Ireland, boarder.
1910 Grant Co census: Brackenridge H. Collins age 52, wife "Lucinda" 53; Ada J. 21, John F. 18, Asby R. 16.
1920 Grant Co. KY census: Brack Collins age 63, Lucetta 63.
Brack was a farmer all his life. He died 6 September 1929, age 72, of "supposed heart trouble" and is buried in the Blackburn Cemetery, Folson, Grant County, Kentucky[30] (now called Vine Run Cemetery).
His obituary as it appeared in the Grant Co. News, 13 Sept 1929: Mt. Zion: Brack Collins died suddenly at his home near Elliston last Friday. He leaves a wife and 5 children, two daughters and three sons, a number of grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral at Vine Run Church, interment in Blackburn Cemetery on Warsaw Pike.
The 1930 Grant Co., KY census shows "Luc S." Collins, 73, widow, living with her son Ashby and his family.
Lucetta's granddaughter Callie Beach McClure recalled that Lucetta lived with her family in her old age and suffered from "senility," probably what we would now call Alzheimer's disease. It was often Callie's job to watch her grandmother to keep her from wandering off.
Lucetta died 30 September 1940, at the age of 84, and is buried beside her husband. Her death certificate gives the cause of death as "pneumonia and infirmities of age."[31] |
