Joseph Beach (about 1765-after 1810)
According to The Beach Family of Kentucky written by T.J. Beach (1989), page 11, Joseph Beach is the ancestor who came from Virginia to settle in Kentucky. He was born about 1765 in Virginia, was found on the tax lists of Caroline and Orange County, VA, and probably lived in Culpeper Co., VA before moving to Kentucky. He and his son Bailey were found in the tax list for Fayette County, KY in 1808; he appeared in the 1810 census of Fayette Co., KY., and died after 1810 in Kentucky. His wife's name is unknown.
Joseph and his wife had five children, two of whom (in bold type below) are direct ancestors of the McClure family line:
i. Margaret Beach m. William Adams
ii. Mary Beach m. Henry Lailor
iii. Bailey Beach, Sr.
b. between 1771-1778, Virginia d. about 1844 Grant Co., KY,

Bailey Beach (about 1774-about 1844
Nancy Vaughn (d. about 1837)
Bailey Beach was born in about 1774 in Virginia,[1] the oldest known son of Joseph Beach and his wife.
He married Nancy Vaughn, daughter of James Vaughn and his wife Sarah in Orange County, VA on 12 Jan. 1793. (see VAUGHN .)
Bailey Beach appears in the Orange County tax lists from 1793-1800.
He moved to Fayette County, Kentucky, before 1808 and is found on the tax lists there until 1820. He appears in the 1810 and 1820 census of Fayette County, Kentucky. In 1821 he moved to Grant County, Kentucky. In 1829 he was listed as living between Mt. Zion and Elliston on Arnold's Creek. He died in Grant County in 1844.

William W. Beach (about 1787-1862)
Mary C. Moore
William W. Beach was born about 1787 in Virginia, the fifth child of Joseph Beach and his wife.[3]
His first marriage was to Peggy Long on February 15, 1811 in Fayette County, Kentucky. They had one child, Addison Beach (1812-1880)[4].
His second marriage was to Mary C. Moore, on August 13, 1817, in Fayette County, Kentucky, the daughter of Captain William Moore.
William moved to Grant County sometime after the 1820 census when he is listed as living next to his brother Bailey in the southern part of Fayette County.
William and Mary had seven children, including:
i. infant (before 1820) ii. William A. Beach b. 1820 or 1821 m. Frances E. Richardson iii. John Beach 1825-1906 iv. David Morrison Beach 1831-1918 v. James Beach b. 1839 vi. Margaret Beach 1840-1932 vii. Amanda Beach b. 1843
William W. Beach was living with his son William A. Beach and his family in 1850.[5] His wife Mary is not mentioned, so it is assumed she died between 1840 and 1850. He died in Kenton County, Kentucky, after 1860 and may be buried in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington. |

William A. Beach (b. about 1820)
Frances E. Richardson (about 1822-1913)
William A. Beach was born between 1820 and 1821, the second child of William W. Beach and Mary C. Moore[6]. He married Frances E. Richardson[7] (or Richerson) on 4 August 1841.[8] She was born about 1822.[9]
William and Frances had nine children including:[10]
i. Morton Beach (1843-1920) m. his 2nd cousin Julia Ann Beach ii. Mary Elizabeth Beach b. 1845 m. William J. Blackburn iii. Monson C. Beach, b. about 1847.[11] iv. Angeline Beach, b. 1854. v. Nancy H. Beach, b. about 1856. vi. Willie Ann Beach (1859-1946) m. David Morris Shields vii. Margaret J. Beach, b. abt 1863 viii. Francis M. Beach, b. abt 1865 ix. Jasper C. Beach, b. abt 1868 (does not appear in 1880 census)
The 1860 Gallatin Co., KY census, p. 594, shows William Beach 37, Frances 36, Morton 18, Elizabeth 15, Nancy 3, and Willie 1.
The 1870 Grant Co., KY census, p. 554, shows William A. Beach, 49, Frances 43, Elizabeth 21, Nancy H. 14, Willie Anna 12, Margaret J. 7, Frances M. 5, and Jasper C. 2.
The 1880 Grant Co., KY census, p. 104D, shows William A. Beach 59, Francis 58, Willie Ann 21, Margaret 18, and Francis M. 15.
No death date is known for William A. Beach, but the Beach book indicates he died in Campbell County, KY. His wife Frances died May 18, 1913, in Campbell County, Kentucky.[12] |

Daniel Coleman Beach (b. about 1805)
1st marriage: Elizabeth McCullough (abt 1806-1888)
2nd marriage: Abigail Price (b. abt 1809)
[Daniel?] Coleman Beach was born in Virginia in about 1805 and moved with his parents, Bailey Beach and Nancy Vaughn, to Grant Co., KY in about 1821.[13]
He is always referred to as Coleman Beach, but his son Moses' death certificate gave his first name as Daniel.
He married, first, Elizabeth (Betsy) McCullough, on 9 December 1824 in Grant Co., KY [14]. The following children are probably theirs:
i. Virginia Beach (1826-1901) m. Jeremiah Sturgeon[15] ii. Martha Ann Beach (1830-1914) m. William Henry Sturgeon[16] (parents of Henreatta Sturgeon who married Stephen Douglas McClure) iii. Moses Beach (1831-1918)[17] iv. George Beach (1839-1923) m. Louanna v. Selvina Beach b. about 1844, m. Parker Hall. vi. Daniel Beach b. 10 Dec 1845, d. 23 Feb 1922[18], m. Mary Ann Plunkett (dtr of George Plunkett who later became Elizabeth McCullough's third husband)
The 1840 Grant County census shows Mrs. Elizabeth Beach living next door to her father-in-law Bailey Beach. She is living with five children ranging in age from under 15 to under 5 years. Identifiable children would be Virginia 12, Martha 10, and George 1. However, the other children are two males under 5, and Moses would have been 9, so perhaps he was living with his father or grandfather at the time. Two other women are also in the household, one aged 20-30 and one aged 40-50.
Coleman went to live in the White River area of Indiana, separating from his first wife Elizabeth about that time. When he returned from Indiana he filed for a divorce which became final 10 March 1843 by an order of the Kentucky Legislature.[19]
The 1850 Grant County census shows Elizabeth Beach, age 39, with Martha 18, George 11, Silvina, 6, and Daniel 3.
On 26 March 1852, Elizabeth Beach, a "widow," married Jeremiah Sturgeon, a widower. (This is Jeremiah III, son of Jeremiah II.) Jeremiah died before 1860.
The 1860 Grant County census shows Elizabeth Sturgeon 45, Sylvina 16, and Daniel 14.
On 24 May 1861 Elizabeth McCullough Sturgeon married George Plunkett.[20]
The 1870 Gallatin Co., KY census shows George Plunkitt 61, Elizabeth 65, Nancy 17, and Jemima 15 (George's daughters by his first marriage).
1880 Gallatin Co., KY census, Napoleon Twp, p. 435C: George Plunkett 71 b. KY father MD, mother KY, Elizabeth 72 b. KY, father & mother VA; Nancy 26 dtr KY.
George Plunkett died in 1883.
Elizabeth died 12 Jan 1888 and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Grant Co., KY.[21]
[Daniel?] Coleman Beach married, second, Abigail Price, and they had the following children:[22]
i. Hannah Beach (1832-1898) m. Harrison W. Miller (grandparents of Emma Miller who married Fred McClure) (see MILLER) ii. Nathaniel Beach (1833-1909) b. on the White River, Indiana iii. Richard Coleman Beach b. Apr 1836. iv. Elizabeth Beach, b. abt 1839. v. Addison Beach (1842-1920) vi. Malinda Beach, b. abt 1844, m. Ammon Connor. vii. Julia Ann Beach (1846-1880) m. Morton Beach[23] (grandparents of Callie Beach who married Homer McClure)
The 1850 Gallatin County census shows Coleman Beach at age 45 with his second family: Abigail 39, Nathaniel 17, Coleman 14, Elizabeth 11, Adison 8, Malinda 6, Julia A. 4, and James W. 1. Also, the newlyweds Hannah Beach Miller, 18, and her husband Harrison W. Miller, 30, are living with the family.
The family is back in Grant County in the 1860 census: Coleman Beach 54, Abijal 50, Addison 17, Melinda 15, Griffin 9, and Julia Ann 14. |

Morton Beach (1843-1920) Julia Ann Beach (b. about 1846-d. after 1900) Morton Beach[24] was born February 22, 1843, probably in Grant or Gallatin County, Kentucky, the oldest son of William A. Beach and Frances Richardson.[25] He married his second cousin Julia Ann Beach, who was born about 1846, daughter of Daniel Coleman Beach and his second wife Abigail Price[26], on February 26, 1863. Morton and Julia Ann had six children[27]:
i.
James William Beach
(1862-1944) m. (1) Ellen Stewart (1864-aft 1900, (2) Emma The 1870 Grant Co. census shows Morton and Julia Beach with children James 7, Richard 5, and Alice 1 month. Callie does not yet appear with the family. [30] The 1880 Gallatin Co., KY census shows Morton and Julia Beach with children James 16, Richard 14, Alice 10, Morton 6, and Callie 2. (The Beach book had Callie listed as the first child, but without a birth date. From this census it would appear she was the fifth child, born in about 1878.)[31] The 1900 census reveals that Julia did NOT die giving birth to Charles, as Charles’ daughter Callie told me. The family is found in the 1900 Grant, Ky census, p. 325, as follows: Morton Beatch, 54, born Sept 1845, married 36 years; Julia wife 49, born Jun 1851, married 36 years, 6 children, 6 living; daughter Callie Bolington, widow, 22, born Jan 1878, one marriage, one child, 0 living; son Charlie Beatch 17, born Nov 1882. According to his death certificate Charles was born in 1879, but he does not appear in the 1880 census. The birthdate on his tombstone is 1880, although the 1900 and 1920 census indicate his birth date was 1882. The family was not found in the 1910 census. We don’t know when Julia died, but it was before Morton’s death in 1920. Morton Beach died February 21, 1920 in Verona, Boone County, Kentucky, at the age of 79, a widower. The cause of death on his death certificate is listed as lobar pneumonia. Informant on the death certificate is William Beach, probably his oldest son. He and Julia are buried in the Pleasant View Baptist Church Cemetery, Elliston, Grant County, Kentucky.[32] Pleasant View Baptist Church cemetery records are now on the Grant County website, but Morton and Julia do not appear. They are probably in unmarked graves.

James William Beach
was born 29 Jan 1862 in Gallatin, Kentucky.
In 1886 he married
Ellen Stewart, and they had 3 children (Clarence, b. Jan 1888; Ella, b.

William’s brother James Morton Beach.
Their son Ell Kendall was born in 1925, and it is he who is the
child in the above photo with his great-uncle James William Beach.
Richard Addison (“Stump”) Beach
was born 20 Apr 1865 in Grant, County, KY.
On 8 December 1891 he married Lulu P. Williams, who was born in

She is buried beside her husband.
James Morton (“Behmer”) Beach
was born in Jun 1874 in Grant County, Kentucky.
On 29 Sep 1895 he married Dora Bollington, who was born in Aug
1875. (Dora may have been a
Cherokee (or part Cherokee) child adopted through the church, a refugee
from the Trail of Tears. This
is family lore and not documented at this time.)
Behmer and Dora had 8 children:
Corinne, b. 1895; Howard Kirtley (1898-1991); Homer (1903-1959);
William Hayden b. 1905; Pearline (1906-1987); Ernestine b. 1907; Ralph

daughter Pearlina).
Dora died on March 22, 1959, at age 85, in Kenton County, Kentucky.
Both are buried in the New Bethel Cemetery, Verona, Boone Co.,
Kentucky.
Callie Beach
was born 29 Oct 1878 in Grant County, Kentucky.
On 21 Aug 1895 in Gallatin Co., Kentucky, she married William
Bollington. (Possibly he was
a brother of Dora Bollington, wife of Callie’s brother James Morton
Beach.) They had one child,
but by 1900 both William and the child had died.
In the 1900 Grant, KY census, Callie Bolington, age 22, is a widow,
1 child, 0 living, living with her parents Morton and Julia Beach and her
younger brother Charlie.
Her brother Charles Beach named his youngest daughter Callie after his
sister. He said Callie took
care of him after his mother died.
Soon after that 1900 census was taken, Callie married Willis Gayle
(1882-1962). They had 6
children: Eva Gayle b. 1902;
Nettie Gayle, b. 1905; Virginia Gayle b. 1912; Stanley Gayle (1913-1988);

Charles Beach (1882-1945)[33]
Clyde Forest Collins (1885-1963)
Photo: Charles Beach & Clyde Collins Beach Charles Beach was born November 3, 1882, in Grant County, Kentucky,[34] the youngest of six children[35] of Morton Beach and Julia Ann Beach.
There is conflicting information about Charles’ birth date. Charles’ death certificate gives his birth date as 3 November 1879. His daughter Callie told me Charles' mother died giving birth to him, but she was mistaken about that. Julia was still living at the time of the 1880 census and the 1900 census.[36] Charles does not appear in the 1880 census. The 1900 census shows Charles as age 17, birthdate November 1882. The 1920 census shows Charles' age as 38,[37] which would mean a birthdate of 1881. Charles’ marriage bond[38] in September 1906 gives his age as 24, a birthdate of 1881. His tombstone gives his birth date as 1880.
He was married first on 28 January 1904 to Sara Osburn, born August 1884, daughter of Brack and Emma Lambert Osborn.[39] They had two children, a son Ira Rasman (born 20 Dec 1904, died 19 June 1985)[40], and another who died in infancy. Sara was stricken with tuberculosis and was an invalid for about two years until her death. Charles hired a housekeeper and nurse to care for his wife and child -- Clyde Collins Jameson, a divorcee with a small daughter named Leuvica (after Clyde's grandmother Blackburn). Leuvica Jameson died in 1913 at age 10.[41]
I have not been able to find Charles and family in the 1910 census.
Charles married Clyde on September 14, 1906[42]. They had ten children:[43]
i. James Brackie Beach, b. about 1908, d. 15 Aug 1970, m. Mattie Belle Townes 1932. ii. Betty V. Beach, b. about 1910 (m. Gobel Jones) d. 26 Sep 1970 iii. Charles Rankin Beach, b. 14 May 1911, d. Sept. 1980, m. Blanch Furnish 1932. iv. John Morton Beach (1913-10 Feb 1986[44]) (m. Daisy Fae Webster) v. William Ashley Beach (1914-20 Jan 1934) (died at Elliston when his horse fell off the Ten Mile Bridge) vi. Richard Worth Beach (b. about 1917, d. 3 June 1967) m. Anna Mae Alexander vii. Callie Roberta Beach (1921-2003) (m. Homer McClure) viii. Clyde L. Beach (1923-1998[45]) (m. Cleo Webster) ix. Harold Leroy Beach (b. 10 May 1925) (m. Frances 1932-1998) x. Clarence M. Beach (b. 13 May 1928, d. 1994[46]) (m. Joella, d. 1968)[47]
Charles named his younger daughter after his sister Callie.
He played the fiddle for barn dances around the countryside to make extra money. His daughter Callie kept his old fiddle for many years, hanging on the wall of her home or in her antique shop.
The 1920 Gallatin County, KY census shows Charles E. Beach 38, Clyde F. 34, Ira 15, James 12, Bettie 10, Charles 8, John 6, William 4, and Richard 11 months.
Callie said their house was on the Grant-Gallatin County line so they could go to whatever schools they chose.
The 1930 census shows the family (with numerous errors) as follows:
1930 Gallatin Co., KY census, Napoleon, p. 6A: Beach, Charlie head 60 married at 32 [he was about 48, married first about 18-20] Eliza [should be Clyde] wife 48 married at 20 Bradley [should be Brackie] son 22; Charles 19; John 16; William 14; Richard 13; Callie 9; Lida [should be Clyde L.] 7; Harold 5; Clarence 1. Charles Beach died August 4, 1945, at the age of 62 (?), and is buried in the Pleasant View Baptist Church Cemetery, Elliston, Kentucky.[48]
Clyde Forest Collins (1885-1963)

Clyde Beach & family
Clyde Forest Collins[49] was born August 18, 1885, in Elliston, Grant County, Kentucky, one of five children of Albert Brack Collins and Lucetta Blackburn Collins.[50]
According to her daughter Callie, her first marriage was to Louis Jameson, about 1902, which ended in divorce. They had a daughter in 1903, Leuvica, named after Clyde's maternal grandmother, who died at the age of 10[51]. During that marriage, they lived in St. Louis.
Returning to Grant County after her divorce, Clyde worked as a housekeeper and nurse for Charles and Sara Beach and their son Ira (who married Cecil Chipman). After Sara’s death, Charles Beach married Clyde on September 14, 1906[52]. They had ten children:
i. James Brackie Beach ii. Betty V. Beach m. Gobel Jones iii. Charles Rankin Beach iv. John Morton Beach (1912-1984)[53] v. William Ashley Beach vi. Richard Worth Beach vii. Callie Roberta Beach m. Homer McClure viii. Clydel Beach m. Cleo Webster ix. Harold Leroy Beach m. Frances x. Clarence M. Beach m. Joella[54]
Clyde was a very hard-working woman all her life. In addition to raising her huge family, she worked in the tobacco fields and in other people’s homes, wherever she could earn a living and wherever she was needed. The only time I remember going to visit her at her place in Elliston was when she was in her mid-70s. She wasn't home, so my husband Mac asked at a little general store in the area if they knew where she was. He was told she was doing housework and ironing for a neighbor who was crippled by arthritis--and indeed that's where we found her. Also, when she was in her 70s, she made her granddaughter Sue McClure’s wedding dress.
Clyde died of cancer on April 18, 1963 at the age of 77, and is buried in the Pleasant View Baptist Church Cemetery, Elliston, Kentucky.[55] Her obituary stated she was survived by two daughters, eight sons, 53 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.[56]
Fifty-three grandchildren! When my sisters and I started having babies, we bought our mother a sterling silver grandmother's bracelet, and each time a grandchild came along we added a charm. The total turned out to be 12 charms. Once my husband Mac noticed her bracelet and said, "If my grandmother had one of those, she wouldn't be able to lift her arm." |
