Stephen McClure family about 1898

Stephen and Henreatta McClure

Stephen and Henreatta McClure

Stephen A. Douglas McClure was born June 4, 1859, in Grant County, KY,[1] the tenth of at least eleven children of Thomas Jefferson ("Jeff") McClure and Abigail Points McClure. [2]

Henreatta Sturgeon was born August 4, 1855, in Grant County, Kentucky, the daughter of William Henry Sturgeon and Martha Beach.[3]  (See STURGEON family and BEACH family)

Stephen does not appear in the 1860 census with his family, though if he was born in 1859, he should have been about one year old.  He does appear in the 1870 census as age 11, so he may simply have been overlooked in 1860.

Stephen told his grandchildren a story about moving to Missouri for a while and returning to Grant County when he was 21, but that has not been verified.[4]  The family appeared in the 1870 and 1880 Kentucky census, so if they moved to Missouri, it must have been between those dates.

Stephen and Henreatta were married December 4, 1881[5], in Grant County, Kentucky, and they had five children:

            i.          Fred McClure (1882-1951)[6] m. Emma Miller

            ii.          Maude (1884-1972) (m. John William Cook, 13 children)[7]

            iii.         John T. McClure (1886-1968) m. Mabel Delph 24 May 1911[8][9]

(1896-1975), 11 children.

iv, v.     Daisy McClure and Tommy McClure, both of whom died as children,
                        probably of diphtheria[10]

The family appears in the 1900 Grant Co., KY census as follows:  Stephen McClure age 42, Etta 41, Frederick 16, Maudie 15, and John T. 12.

They appear in the 1920 Grant Co., KY census as "Steave" McClure 60 and Ettie 62.

Stephen died 7 October 1939 of colon cancer.  He is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Grant County, KY.[11]  His great-granddaughter provided me with a photo of what remained of his grave marker in 1997; by 1999 it had disappeared.[12]

Henreatta lived her later years with her daughter Maud, and she died April 17, 1951, at age 95, of breast cancer.  She is also buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.[13]

Several photos of Stephen and Henreatta exist, including one of the entire family, including the two small children who died so young, probably taken about 1898.
