Samuel McClure (1709-1779) Mary Kelso (b. 1711) Samuel McClure was born about 1709 in Raphoe Parish, County Donegal, Ireland, the son of Halbert and Agnes McClure. He married Mary Kelso about 1736 in County Donegal, Ireland. She was born 1711 in Ireland and died in Virginia.[1] Samuel and Mary had nine children: i. Samuel McClure II, b. about 1737 in Orange Co., VA ii. William McClure I, b. about 1739 in Orange Co.,, VA, d. 1785 in Rockbridge Co., VA iii. Elizabeth McClure, b. 1742 Virginia, m. Malcolm McClure. iv. Anne McClure, b. about 1743 in Virginia v. Hannah McClure, b. about 1745 in Augusta Co., VA, d. before 1790 in Botetourt Co., VA; m. her cousin Samuel McClure (son of John)[2] vi. Mary McClure b. abt 1747 probably in VA, m. Thomas Ratcliff. vii. Jean McClure b. abt 1749 probably in VA, m. Robert Elliott. viii. Agnes McClure, b. abt 1751 probably in VA, m. James Campbell ix. Alexander Trimble McClure, b. abt 1759, d. abt 1816. See Halbert McClure's biography for details on the immigration from Ireland to Pennsylvania and thence to Augusta County, Virginia, which later became Botetourt County, and today is Rockbridge County. Samuel's brother John C. McClure, Jr., was not the only one in the family who served the Revolutionary War effort. "Samuel … provided a mount for an expedition that was carried out in 1777 to rescue settlers under attack by the Cherokee Indians in Fincastle County."[3] Later on, Samuel, as well as his brother Malcolm, provided supplies for the military.[4] |
